The compact SUV category has been the most popular in Canada for ages. The reason for this is simple: the vehicles in this category offer an appealing size to consumers. Not too big, not too small, the compact SUV offers space for five people, but more importantly, a cargo capacity that allows you to take the family on the road with everything you need.
L'Ami Junior Nissan, your dealer in Saguenay, gives you a look at the three vehicles that offer perhaps the most value and choice to consumers, with the spotlight on the latest model in this category, the 2021 Nissan Rogue.
Nissan Rogue
Nissan it a home run by introducing its Rogue to the market in 2007 (2008 model year). Its introductory version quickly became the most popular in its family, and the best-selling too. By the time the model was revamped in 2014, the Rogue had solidified its position, both at Nissan and across the industry. This year, we get the third generation of this SUV and what we've seen so far is quite impressive.
It all starts with a distinctive design. What helps a model stand the test of time is its classic lines. In this respect, the 2021 Nissan Rogue is very well poised. It meets all of the customer's needs with a front-wheel drive base model (all-wheel drive is also available), as well as two other versions, one with improved specs (SV) and a fully-loaded version (Platinum). The 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine is smooth and flexible. It has 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, which allows for powerful acceleration and throttle. What's more, with the continuously variable transmission that comes standard, you get good fuel economy ratings of 8.9 L/100 km in the city and 7 L/100 km on the highway (front-wheel drive model). With all-wheel drive, that means 9.3 and 7.2 litres, respectively.
Finally, the Nissan interior features a rich layout and high quality materials. All equipment comes standard. The multimedia system is worthy of mention, as it has been redesigned to be more user-friendly than ever. The 10.2-inch heads-up display screen shows clear and precise information in colour.
Toyota RAV4
A best seller in its category, the Toyota RAV4 needs no introduction. This vehicle doesn't offer any particular strong points, but rather a set of features that make it an interesting choice.
First, there is more than one version: the RAV4 can be built a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Then there's the hybrid version, which has the same engine, but also two electric units, one in the front and one in the back, with 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque.
To top it all off, there is the Prime plug-in hybrid version. With a range of 68 kilometres and 302 horsepower, it allows for all-electric operation most of the time, as well as responsive acceleration.
Ford Escape
For a long time, the Ford Escape was among the top three sellers in the compact SUV category. Its redesign has been long overdue, so it went unnoticed at times, but it shouldn't be underestimated. Like the RAV4, it's also available in a plug-in version, good for about 60 kilometres. A hybrid model is also available, as are conventional engine models.
The big difference is that each version has a distinct powertrain, which translate into different driving experiences. There's even a basic model with a 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that offers really good fuel economy.
