For more than 38 years, the Nissan Sentra has evolved and grown, and continues to be a popular choice for compact sedan consumers who see it as a benchmark for reliability and safety. The name Sentra evokes images of safety, just like the sentry who watches out for and protects us.

In this blog, L’Ami Junior Nissan in Saguenay near Jonquière and La Baie tells us the highlights of the evolution of its Sentra, with a special focus on the eighth-generation Nissan Sentra, the one we’ve been eagerly awaiting.

The Nissan Car on the Road for Nearly 40 Years: The Sentra!

One must go back to 1982 to see the first Nissan Sentra, which replaced the Datsun B‑210. From 1982 to 1985, this Nissan was available in four models: two‑door sedan, four‑door sedan, five‑door wagon and three‑door hatchback coupe. The Sentra quickly became a success, partly due to the appeal of low fuel consumption.

The second generation, from 1986 to 1990, was marked by improvements in powertrain technology, but also by the sporty look of the Nissan Sentra with its E, XE, GXE, SE and SE R classes. These versions will remain in the Sentra landscape until 2003.

The third generation, which ran from 1990 to 1994, was marked by interior updates, new front and rear bumpers and expansion of the model’s distribution to the Middle East and Africa. The Sentra gains popularity and wins over the world.

The fourth version begins in 1995 and runs until 2000. The Nissan Sentra continues to impress and comes in several versions (Base, XE, GXE, GLE, SE and SE Limited). Of course, the sportier SE R version remains omnipresent at the Japanese automaker and the model is sold worldwide.

The fifth generation starts in 2000 and runs until 2006. This period is marked by new updates in terms of transmission, but also in terms of powertrain. For example, the Nissan Sentra SE R Spec V will now develop 175 horsepower and 180 lb‑ft of torque, a significant increase over the previous versions.

From 2007 to 2012, the sixth-generation Nissan Sentra will become more compact, but will remain a mid-size sedan that wins international awards. In 2010, the Sentra received a mid-cycle refresh. Revisions included a new Altima-inspired grille, a revised lower fairing and slightly different headlights. At the rear, new taillights (although almost identical to previous years) and additional chrome trim on the trunk and side mouldings highlight the major changes.

The seventh generation (2013–2019) of the Nissan Sentra showed the full face of this sedan and how elegant, but also how capable it is. Over the years, it has never ceased to be a success story in terms of looks and reliability.

In 2020, the new eighth-generation Nissan Sentra has been completely redesigned and offers you a whole new look. Indeed, this very useful car in the city and on the road transforms the brand’s legendary compact sedan into a model that turns heads with unprecedented interior refinement, a standard Safety Shield 360 and high-performance connectivity.

Nissan’s new eighth-generation Sentra is based on a new platform with significantly improved proportions and stance: approximately 5 cm lower and 5 cm wider than the previous generation. The exterior incorporates Nissan’s latest design language found in other Nissan vehicles, including the iconic V motion grille and LED headlights.

The interior of the 2020 compact sedan is even more refined and luxurious, creating a high-quality experience for driver and passengers. The story goes on, and the Sentra is more than ever firmly rooted in the Quebec landscape.
